In an effort to help you support your child’s reading at home, we wanted to share a website that will help you to find books that are the right fit for your student.
Your child is assessed three times per year using the NWEA test. This test provides the student's ‘Lexile Level’ as a reading level.
There are many types of reading levels you may be familiar with, such as Fountas and Pinnel, Reading Counts, AcceleratedReader and Rigby. They all use different systems, be it number or letter, to provide a measure of a student’s reading ability.
The CommonCore State Standards recognize Lexile levels as the preferred reading leveling system.
The "Lexile" website is a very user-friendly site we wanted to make you aware of to assist your child in selecting books to read. On this site, you can work with your child to generate a book list tailored to their ability and interest level, which you can then bring to your local library or bookstore to find great books that your child wants to read!
Using Lexile
Step 1: Once you are in the "Lexile" website, input your child’s Lexile range in the minimum and maximum fields on the home page.
If you do not have this information from an NWEA report handy, please feel free to contact your child’s teacher, and they can quickly retrieve that information for you!
Step 2: Allow your child to select all of their interests and preferred reading genres.
Step 3: Click ‘submit,’ and your book list will be generated according to level and interest.
